The Dark Queen -- Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Cira was a woman nearly three hundred years old.  She was born in Cadiz, but lived in Seville for nearly half of her existence.  The rumors were she was dangerous, exiled from her home, but I could not find any truths to the rumors.  What I did know was my sister was taken with her.  Cira's tan skin and dark hair gave her an unmistakable exotic beauty that neither sex could resist.  But in Catholic Spain, such love between women was strictly forbidden...unless you were a Queen.

There were whispers throughout the vampire community about the new couple, and unrest grew with every declamation from my Queen about poverty and the misuse of slaves.  Some vampires chose to leave Seville, not wishing to be part of her kingdom.  Some acquiesced to the wishes of Debra.  Some plotted in the shadows, waiting for a chance to dispose of their Romanian Queen.  Debra ignored all of them.  Her attention turned more and more towards Cira, and further from the teachings of the bible Spanish vampires often quoted.

Debra was always silent about her past.  The horrors she had lived left scars that time could not heal.  Had she have been forthcoming, I doubt anyone would have pointed at her or cursed her for not being able to love a man.  Even a Queen deserves love, and somewhere in the darkness of Seville she found it.  Cira returned that love, and I saw the spark return to my sister's eyes.  She was happy for the first time since her youth.
